Join the MEM and the JIA Foundation for a free guided tour—one of the city’s Jane’s Walks.

Begin your MEM visit with the travelling exhibition How Well Do You Know Your Chinatown?, which shares the stories of the community, from its very beginnings.

After the exhibition, you’ll head to Chinatown House to meet the team at the JIA Foundation. They’ll take you through the streets of the neighbourhood, where you’ll discover its rich history, distinctive architecture, and vibrant history.

This walking tour is a unique opportunity to rediscover the iconic neighbourhood and its story, told by the people who know it best.

About Jane’s Walk

Jane’s Walk is an annual event of city circuits inspired by Jane Jacobs, a pioneering urbanist and activist.

In Montréal, Jane’s Walk takes the form of free community-led walking tours. Residents are invited to share stories about their neighbourhood, as well as insights on its history, architecture, public spaces, and social issues, while offering the opportunity to exchange with their community.

Organized by the Centre d'écologie urbaine de Montréal, Jane’s Walk invites Montrealers to discover a new side of their city, and get to know their neighbours.

About the JIA Foundation

The JIA Foundation is a non-profit organization with a mandate to protect and promote the heritage of Montréal’s Chinatown—the buildings, businesses, and traditions that define the neighbourhood.

The foundation develops cultural and educational programming in Chinatown to foster community development while protecting its history. With community-led projects and with the help of various organizations and partners, the JIA Foundation works to build a sense of community ownership and to advocate for Chinatown’s future.
